Vail to celebrate Australia Day

America's largest ski resort will be painted green and gold in a week of celebrations for Australia Day.

Vail Mountain in Colorado will host a series of special events to mark the upcoming national holiday, from outdoor parties to a traditional Aussie barbecue in the snow.

Festivities will kick off on January 19 with a cocktail party in Vail Village, where Australian passport holders will get the privilege of discounted drinks and two free glasses of champagne.

The party continues on January 26, when traditional Australian cuisine will be on the menu, as well as local beer, Aussie Rules Football and an outdoor barbecue.

"The fact that so many Aussies fly such a long way to spend their summer holidays in Vail is something we are a little in awe of," Vail Mountain's Adam Sutner said.

"This is our small way of saying thanks Australia! We love you."

Vail, which boasts more than 5000 acres of skiable terrain, will mark its 50th birthday at the end of 2012.
