Australians can’t get enough of Europe rail travel, topping Rail Europe’s ticket sales for the third year running with a 25 percent increase in passenger numbers this year alone.
Contributing to a quarter of all Rail Europe’s global sales in the first semester this year (1 Jan - 30 June), Australians have spent a massive $41.1 million on rail travel so far this year, with global spending expected to exceed $247.2 million by the end of this year.
Rail Europe’s manager Australasia Richard Leonard has attributed the healthy growth to the increasing awareness of the convenience, comfort and efficiency offered by train services in Europe.
Mr Leonard said it’s not only Rail Europe’s innovative business model and products that contributed to the growth, but an improved understanding by travellers of the sheer simplicity of this mode of transportation.
“Aussies are savvy travellers, often opting for the most practical and uncomplicated travel solutions, where they can still enjoy their scenic European journeys,” the manager commented, adding that there is a bonus to travellers with significant savings of up to 60 percent when purchasing tickets and passes a few months in advance.
Mr Leonard said that rail travel will only increase in the coming years with the addition of new trains, new routes and improved services.
“We will be seeing more Aussies exploring Europe and travelling through tracks less travelled,” Mr Leonard said.
The launch of direct connections to some of the most important European railways, Deustche Bahn and Trenitalia along with travel agents and travel arrangers ability to access the same offer as in Germany or Italy, with real time access to all trains, fares (including the most discounted ones), promotions, as well as advanced functionalities like e-ticketing will only assist in the growth of rail travel.Australians can’t get enough of Europe rail travel, topping Rail Europe’s ticket sales for the third year running with a 25 percent increase in passenger numbers this year alone.
