Manila Airport Brushes up Toilets

The Philippines is refurbishing 121 toilets at the capital's international airport, which has been ranked among the world's worst by traveller surveys.

The 32.6-million-peso ($A825,000) project is expected to be completed by December, when travel peaks for the Christmas holidays, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications.

The clean-up will target toilets in all four terminals of Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the department says.

The airport administration is also installing 57 new air-conditioning units at Terminals 1 and 2, where warm temperatures have resulted in numerous complaints in recent months with some passengers fainting.

In January, the government began a major refurbishment of Terminal 1, the oldest of the airport terminals. The 1.3-billion-peso project should be finished in time for the country's hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in 2015.

In 2013, the NAIA was ranted as the world's worst airport in an online travel survey by sleepinginairport.nets for its dilapidated facilities, stinking toilets, long waiting times and unfriendly officials.
