Qantas Offers Trip Down Memory Lane

Ever fancied doing a Don Draper on board a flight?

No, not in the way you might associate with the Mad Men TV character, more along the lines of sipping Mai Tais, eating Lobster Thermidore and being served by a hostie in a Pucci uniform.

Qantas is considering making the experience a reality in the form of retro-themed flights.

The recent delivery of a retro designed 737-800 complete with 1970s livery sparked a nostalgic response among staff and media.

During the trip from Seattle to Sydney, those aboard were treated to offerings such as devils on horseback, stuffed quail eggs, lobster Thermidore, beef Wellington and the all-important sherry trifle.

Qantas group executive of brand marketing and corporate affairs, Olivia Wirth, said there was lots of discussion on the flight, and offering something similar for the public was absolutely something the company was considering.

"I think it would be a sell-out, I actually think we could do a number of them," Wirth told AAP.

"Including the retro menu and the Pucci outfits of the cabin crew, I think it would be an absolute hit."

The plane, dubbed the retro roo, is the company's 75th Boeing 737 and will be used for domestic flights.

The livery is based on the 1970s design used on the airline's first B747s.

The retro roo landed in Sydney on Wednesday to a welcome event hosted by Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce.
