Sydney shore to Singapore sling

Discounted fares are now available for a 14-night repositioning cruise from Sydney to Singapore on Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas.

An unofficial highlight, not listed in the brochures, is the chance to sail one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes between northern Australia and southeast Asia, viewing cargo ships, fishing boats and other vessels of all shapes and sizes. There are four days at sea between Darwin and Singapore: a ship-spotter’s dream.

The official itinerary focuses on Queensland destinations – Brisbane, Airlie Beach, Cairns and Port Douglas.

In Brisbane, you can climb the Story Bridge, take a sandboarding tour on North Stradbroke Island or shear a sheep at the Australian Woolshed. In Airlie Beach, opt for a day trip to the Whitsundays or simply unwind at a beachfront café. In Cairns, cruise-tour guests will venture to lush rainforests, wetlands and woodlands while trying to spot the local wildlife.

Port Douglas is more upmarket but just as laidback and a perfect place for a drink at one of the many seaside venues. More active adventurers can book an excursion to the reef, river or rainforest.

Offering a strong dose of Aussie culture with a little Asian flavour, Darwin has modernised in recent years. Attractions include a new waterfront precinct, a manmade (croc-free) beach and wave pool, and a main street lined with shops, pubs, restaurants and Crocosaurus Cove’s Cage of Death.

To keep guests entertained while sailing the vast distances between ports of call, the 3,114-passenger, 15-deck Voyager of the Seas is packed full of fun features, from a surfing simulator and a rock-climbing wall to ice-skating and basketball. The family-friendly megaliner also boasts recently refurbished cabins, expanded dining options, 24-hour room service, 14 bars, 10 pools and hot tubs, kids clubs, a day spa and gym. Much of the action takes place in the ship’s Royal Promenade, which hosts parades, dancing and duty-free shopping.

On arrival in Singapore, don’t miss the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, an iconic facility in itself, located next to the new downtown area and Marina Bay Sands, an integrated resort, casino, science museum, dining, nightlife and shopping centre.

Check into your four-star hotel for an overnight stay, allowing just enough time to experience the city’s fascinating mix of Western and Eastern cultures. Ride on the Singapore Flyer, the world’s largest observation wheel, have an alfresco meal at Clarke’s Bay, go to Universal Studios or the Singapore Night Safari zoo, and finish with a Singapore Sling cocktail at the historic Raffles Bar.

Departing 19 April 2017, the ‘Sydney Shore to Singapore Sling’ fly-cruise-stay package includes the 14-night cruise, shipboard meals (excluding specialty restaurants), a bonus US$100 onboard credit per twin cabin, pre-paid gratuities, one-night’s accommodation in Singapore, and an economy flight home to Sydney. Twin-share fares start from AU$2,199 per person for an inside cabin, AU$2,559 for an outside cabin, AU$3,279 for a balcony cabin.
