Comparison website Finder.com has crunched the numbers to discover that booking international flights 17 weeks ahead of time hits the sweet spot when it comes to pricing.
Which means late August is the ideal time to organise your overseas getaway.
If you're thinking of a summer staycation, however, you may want to hold off booking a little longer - the website's research suggests travellers should book five to 11 weeks in advance for the best domestic deals.
When it comes to the cheapest day of the week to fly around Australia, Finder.com suggest travelling on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, after comparing data on domestic carriers Jetstar, Qantas, Tigerair and Virgin Australia.
And stumped whether to book a morning or afternoon flight? Finder's research suggests early morning, lunch time or late night flights are cheapest.
Price peaks correspond with the rush of working commuters, which means Friday evenings, Saturday evenings and Monday mornings are all expensive times to fly.
HANDY TIPS FOR TRAVELLING WITH KIDS
* Travel as light as possible and give yourself plenty of time to pass through check-in and security.
* Pack empty bottles for water to avoid steep airport pricing, and snacks to distract children during take-off.
* Avoid long-haul flights leaving early in the morning as it wastes a day in transit.
* Consider night flights to help with sleep if travelling with small children.
